REMINDER: AUDITIONS FOR “ONCE UPON A MATTRESS”
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, MAY 27 AND 28, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A little background information about our ONCE UPON A MATTRESS Staff.
Jon Clevenger, Director: Jon is a graduate of Ball State University with a Master’s Degree in Theatre and English. Jon taught high school for 34 years and retired to spend time reading and working in his yard; hopeless ventures both as there is never enough time to read all the books he has on his list or enough time to get all of those weeds! He and his wife Diane are the parents of three grown children and five very special grandchildren.
John Tanis, Music Director: The musical life of John Tanis commenced when, at age five, he began weekly lessons on accordion. After a number of years then graduated to studying the organ. By age twelve he was playing church services on the pipe organ. Throughout high school he played for a weekly church service that was broadcast on WLS radio in Chicago.
John graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, with graduate work at Vandercook College and Roosevelt University.
As a music educator he was an advocate of music theatre and offered opportunities for students to participate in edited versions of musicals, operettas and even operas, as well as writing his own musical treatments of stories such as Madeline, Ghosts of Singapore, Skellig, among others.
Semi-retired in Rensselaer where several of his siblings and families also reside, John enjoys gardening and free-ranging chickens and the peace and quiet of rural living.
Karen Kelley Dugan, Choreographer: Karen is returning as Choreographer this year after having directed The Carnegie Players productions of: GUYS AND DOLLS, HELLO, DOLLY!, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and THE KING AND I.
For fourteen years Karen taught at the Vincent Chase Acting Workshop, at five private schools and also for the American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts. She has also worked in the Hollywood area for eighteen years.
Karen is a professional lawn care, interior/exterior decorator and a caretaker of the elderly. In her free time she substitute teaches for the local schools. Karen makes life fun and is looking forward to working with Jon and John. Especially Jon Clevenger, as he was her high school teacher and idol!
So, if you’re interested in being a part of the comedy fairy-tale-with-a-twist, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, come to The Carnegie Players Auditions on May 27 and 28 at the Rensselaer Central High School Auditorium. Auditions are held both nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Please enter R.C.H.S. via the north entrance door # 8. Children in grades six and under must be accompanied to auditions by a parent or guardian. You may bring a prepared song of choice with either written sheet music for an accompanist or a music CD. If you do not have a prepared song, you will be asked to audition with a song selected by the Music Director. After you have had auditions, you will be free to leave. You do not need to stay the whole evening.
Some of the parts available are:
A Princess, a hapless Prince, a King who is speechless but communicates through comical gestures, a Queen, Sir Studley, Sir Luce, a Jester, a Minstrel, a Wizard and numerous Knights and Ladies-in-Waiting.
There are limited children’s parts. We do ask that if your child is involved with the production, that a parent or guardian be at each rehearsal that the child is at. We have many tasks or work areas that we can put you to work with, if you do not want to be an actor or actress on stage.
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS will hit the R.C.H.S. stage on July 31, August 1 and August 2, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Our production staff: Director Jon Clevenger and Music Director John Tanis, Choreographer Karen Kelley Dugan.
If you are not quite the “on-stage” type but are interested in helping, we are always looking for help with set construction, costuming, make-up and hair styling, sound and lighting, stage hands and many other aspects of a show. We encourage you to come to auditions also and let us know what you are interested in helping with. You don’t have to be a professional seamstress, construction worker or sound/lighting engineer….so don’t be shy!
See you on May 27 and May 28, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the R.C.H.S. Auditorium for auditions for ONCE UPON A MATTRESS! If you have questions, please contact Kevin Long at 866- 8713.
